Left to Right: Miguel Guhlin and T. Walton

Ms. T. Walton (pictured above) excitedly shared Magnolia ISD’s efforts to organize a conference–which will be keynoted by a dear colleague, David Warlick (2cents Blog)–and I immediately was thrilled about the possibilities!  Over the last few years, we’ve all started to see school districts stepping up and organizing their own conferences rather than relying on state-wide organizations! Another key idea is the involvement of curriculum. As some speculate about the demise of Instructional Technology, the truth is we’re finally seeing curriculum departments realizing that technology can’t be separate but equal anymore…rather, integrated.

Regrettably, this conference is only open to Magnolia ISD (although Ms. Walton was kind enough to allow me to attend at no charge…I heard it, honest!). One of the questions I forgot to ask Ms. Walton was, Are you going to develop an online presence for the conference where folks can come back again and again to listen to the conversations that occurred?

You know, it’s all about those conversations. In a chat with Kristy Vincent (@bigpurplehat) she said something pretty moving. I can’t quote it exactly but she said, “Your presentations are like conversations.” Wow, what a neat thing to say. I love this idea of presentations as conversations between speaker and audience, less monolithic and sage on the mountain handing down commandments. Imagine if we were to get the 10 commandments these days…how would they be introduced?

That’s why conferences like the ones Ms. Walton shares are so powerful. They involve grassroots efforts of individuals putting together learning conversations that we can all “listen in on” when they are published online. Local goes global.
